Methodology
The 4.5% escalation rate comes from an analysis of 2,841 after-hours veterinary cases across independent small-animal practices. 128 cases (4.5%) met criteria for DVM escalation; the remaining 2,713 (95.5%) were resolved with self-care guidance, ER routing, or next-available booking.
On-call compensation figures are self-reported from clinic managers and DVMs surveyed in 2024. Median per-page compensation: $125–$175 for urban practices, $75–$150 for rural practices. The default of $150/page is conservative.
